2013 News and Coming Events

January

  • Summer recess until February 6th 2013.

February

  • The Foothills Speaking Club resumed its meetings on Wednesday 6th of February.  Welcome back everyone!.  New members are also welcome to start anytime.
  • We are meeting at a different venue in 2013.  We have returned to the Gosnells Hotel, Albany Highway, Gosnells.  We now meet downstairs in the Board Room of the hotel.  Meetings start at 6:30pm and finish at 8pm - every Wednesday.
  • The past president's BBQ was held on Staurday 23rd at Ivan's place in Brookdale.  We enjoyed a very pleasurable evening. The stars were brightly lit in a clear sky & full moon just a couple of days off. Party lights adorned the trees, the BBQ was perfecto.” and there was great conversation around the table on a wide variety of topics. Liz’s sweets were a hit as well.

March

  • Congratulations to Marvella and John on joining the Foothills Speaking Club.

April

  • On April 25th the Great ANZAC Day Debate was held at Ascot Quays in Belmont.  The event was organised by Club 15.  The Foothills Speaking Club were the defending champions and in a close competition successfully defended their crown.  Well done to Carmel, Joanna and Bill.

May

  • The annual Sausage Sizzle was held at Bunnings Maddington on the Sunday before Mother's Day.  It was a big success and all funds raised will support the club in its public speaking activities.
  • The club hosted the Perth South of the River Inter Club Speaking competition on 29th May.  This is a competition open to members who have been in Rostrum for less than 4 years and is a closely fought tussle between Clubs 11, 15, 17, 21, 50 and 52.  Congratulations to Marvella who extended the Club's winning streak to three.

June

  • The Club held its annual impromptu speaking competition - the President's Trophy.  What is impromptu speaking?  As the name sounds this is speaking on a topic where you have the minimum of notice.  This is very much real world speaking - as you would in a corporate or organisation situation.
  • Winners of Heat 1 - Rick and Ivan
  • Winners of Heat 2 - Joanna and Clive
  • The Final (a 3 minute speech with 3 minutes preparation time) was won by Rick - congratulations.

July

  • The start of Term 2. New members are welcome.
  • A big welcome to new member Max.

August

  • Congratulations to Sally on joining the club and tackling her fear of public speaking.

September

  • The heats of the Arthur Garvey state speaking competition have started.  This is the most prestigious public speaking competition in Western Australia. 
  • Heat 5 of the Arthur Garvey state speaking competition was held at the club on the 18th.
  • A big congratulations to Joanna and Susan who have won their way into the final to be held in October.

October

  • The State final of the AGSOY competition will be held at the Karrinyup Golf Club on October 26th.  The event will be subsidised by Rostrum WA.  The club will also provide a subsidy which will make it a great value night.
  • The club's open speaking competition will start - 2 heats and a final.

November

  • The club's open speaking competition continues.

December

  • The final of the club's Speaker of the Year will be held on the 4th of December.  
  • The Christmas party and wind up meeting for 2013 will be held on the 11th of December at the Gosnells Hotel.
  • The club will take a Summer Break until the first Wednesday in February 2014.
